Female Pattern Hair Loss — DHT sensitivity & Natural DHT blockers.
Written by Rafaela – Registered Nurse, Dermal Therapist, Cosmetic Injector and Trichologist.
A pattern I kept seeing.
Over time, I started noticing something consistent.
Many clients experiencing thinning — especially through the crown and part line — had a similar pattern.
Not sudden loss.
Not patchy.
But gradual:
- finer strands
- reduced density
- more visible scalp
And in many cases, there was a family history.
This is what we refer to as androgenetic alopecia — often called “male pattern” hair loss, even in women.
What’s actually happening?
Female pattern hair loss involves progressive miniaturisation of the hair follicles. Androgens such as DHT may contribute in genetically susceptible follicles, but their role in women is complex, and not every woman with female pattern hair loss has elevated androgen levels. Over time, affected follicles may spend less time in the growth phase and produce progressively finer, shorter hairs.
So it’s not just about the hormone.
It’s about how your follicle responds to it.
Why we chose a multi-botanical formula?
When formulating the Ellà Viè Scalp Elixir, the focus was not on one “hero ingredient.” We selected botanicals for different supportive roles within a pre-wash scalp routine, while recognising that the strength of scientific evidence varies between ingredients.
What the research says about key ingredients?
Saw Palmetto
Saw palmetto is studied for its proposed influence on 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme involved in converting testosterone to DHT. Research into oral and topical saw palmetto formulations has shown promising results for hair density and hair count, although larger clinical trials are still needed. This makes it a relevant botanical for a formula designed with androgen-related pathways in mind.
Rosemary
Another key ingredient in the Ellà Viè Scalp Elixir.
Study showed:
- both rosemary and minoxidil groups showed increased hair count
- there was no significant difference between them
- the minoxidil group reported more scalp itchiness
That’s where the comparison comes from.
Other scalp-supporting botanicals:
Nettle, black caraway, clove, onion and lavender were selected to complement the formula from different angles. Together, they provide scalp-conditioning, soothing, antioxidant and hair-strengthening support—helping create a healthier environment for hair and scalp care.
Hair thinning can have several causes, and female pattern hair loss may coexist with shedding related to illness, stress, medications or nutritional deficiencies. Persistent, sudden or patchy hair loss should be assessed by a qualified health professional so the cause is not assumed from appearance alone. Scalp care can support comfort and hair quality, but it does not replace an appropriate diagnosis or evidence-based treatment.
Why consistent scalp care matters?
Consistency matters when supporting the scalp and hair follicles. Ellà Viè Scalp Elixir combines rosemary, saw palmetto and complementary botanicals in a nourishing pre-wash treatment designed to support scalp health, hair strength and the environment in which healthy hair grows.
Final thought.
If you notice gradual widening of your part, reduced density through the crown or progressively finer hairs, seek an assessment early. Female pattern hair loss can progress over time, and identifying the cause allows you to consider appropriate evidence-based options. Supportive scalp care may complement that plan, but it should not delay professional advice.
